Hair Restoration Q & A
What causes hair loss?
People lose an average of 100 hairs every day. If you notice extensive hair loss, balding, or thinning hair, it could be due to several factors, such as genetics and hormonal changes.
Hormonal changes
Changes in your hormone levels due to pregnancy, childbirth, menopause, or thyroid problems can lead to hair loss.
Alopecia
Alopecia is a medical condition that causes scalp infections and patchy hair loss.
Medication
The side effects of some drugs, like radiation therapy, can cause hair loss.
No matter what causes your hair loss, Dr. Gressel and her team offer solutions and empathic support.
What is platelet-rich plasma?
Dr. Gressel provides platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy for effective hair restoration. PRP is a preparation of platelets and growth factors in a small volume of plasma that Dr. Gressel concentrates in a special centrifuge machine.
Platelets in human blood release a multitude of growth factors and other molecules that are especially responsive to tissue injury.
The growth factors initiate and stimulate the conditions for healing and hair growth. These molecules regulate the healing cascade, including cell proliferation and inflammation.
How does PRP work for hair restoration?
PRP therapy is an excellent treatment that uses microneedling with platelet-rich plasma to stimulate hair growth.
Dr. Gressel takes a sample of your blood and runs it through a centrifuge that separates the platelets from other blood matter to concentrate the platelets. She carefully injects this platelet solution into your hair follicles using microneedling. She then spreads the injections across your scalp approximately every half-inch over the area of thinning hair. The entire process takes up to 20 minutes.
Dr. Gressel recommends at least three PRP sessions spaced about a month apart, and one maintenance session every six months to a year, depending on your individual needs.
What are my other hair restoration treatment options?
In addition to offering PRP therapy for hair restoration, Dr. Gressel and her team provide topical treatments and special combinations of topical plus PRP solutions to seal hair follicles and give you the best outcome. They also check your thyroid hormone, other hormones, and vitamin and mineral levels, as low levels can contribute to hair loss.
